Joint Pain Q & A

What is joint pain?

Joint pain is caused by inflammation of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage or bone in your joints. The pain can feel sudden or gradual, depending on your condition. In some instances, joint pain is so severe that it limits your range of mobility, causing your joints to feel stiff and sore.

Most people experience joint pain in their neck, back, hips, elbows, knees, or ankles. Because this type of pain is typically progressive, early intervention is key.

Which conditions cause joint pain?

Arthritis, or chronic joint inflammation, is the most common reason for constant joint pain. Other conditions include:

  • Bursitis
  • Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Infection
  • Sports injury
  • Tendinitis
  • Gout
  • Joint overuse

Certain diseases, such as the flu and hepatitis, can also cause joint point. That’s why it’s important to call your doctor right away if you have a fever, or if your joint is red, tender, or noticeably warm to the touch.

Which joint pain treatments are available at Advanced Pain Management?

Facet joint injections

Commonly used to treat lumbar, cervical, and thoracic pain, facet joint injections are ideal for patients with arthritis and whiplash injury. The injection site depends on the location of your pain, but it’s typically injected into your neck or back. Some patients experience immediate pain relief following their first injection, but most take a few days to see the full effect.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy

PRP therapy uses the platelet-rich plasma in your blood to repair damage and promote natural healing in the soft tissues, tendons, and joints. This plasma contains proteins and growth factors that reduce inflammation and pain in your joints.

After taking your blood, the team separates your PRP from your blood by running the sample through a centrifuge. Then they inject the PRP directly into your joint, muscles, or tendons.

Pain relief typically starts within the first four weeks, but you should notice dramatic results after six months.

Stem cell therapy

Stem cell therapy uses stem cell injections to treat pain. These stem cells are taken from fat tissue or bone marrow and can be injected into your joints or cartilage to repair damage over time, much in the same way as PRP therapy.

When combined with physical therapy and other joint pain treatments, these groundbreaking treatments can help alleviate pain in the joints. For more information, call Advanced Pain Management or schedule an appointment online.
